Quick Tip: How to Create a Wicker Seamless Pattern in Adobe Illustrator
Jan 24th
In the following tutorial I’m going to show you how to create a wicker seamless pattern in Adobe Illustrator using the Gradient Tool, Blending Modes and the Transform Effect. Step 1 Create a New document by hitting Command + N or go to File > New. Enter 600 in the width box and 600 in the height box. Step 2 Select the Rectangle Tool (M) from the Tool panel and click on the Artboard. The Rectangle Option box will pop up. Set the Width and Height of our basic shape to 100 by 50. Step 3 Set the Stroke to None. Select the Gradient Tool (G) and use the following colors: R=97 G=60 B=42 R=216 G=166 B=93 R=255 G=242 B=191 R=247 G=214 B=132 R=238 G=214 B=168 Then set the gradient angle to 90°. Then add some Sliders between the indicated colors and drag them to different positions to achieve the result as mine. Make sure that the colors at the edges are still R=97 G=60 B=42 and R=238 G=214 B=168. Step 4 Select the created rectangle. Copy it (Command + C) and Paste in Front (Command + F). Fill it with Linear Gradient as shown in the following image. The colors are R=35 G=31 B=32 and R=147 G=149 B=152. Then set the gradient angle to 0°. Step 5 Open the Transparency panel …

How to Create an Editorial Illustration from Sketch to Vector
Nov 23rd
In today’s tutorial, we’ll look at how I started from a pencil sketch to then create an editorial illustration in Adobe Illustrator. I’ll show you how I created some custom Art Brushes to add shading and detailing. Step 1 We start with a basic sketch. At this stage we only take care to define the contours of the figures, without stopping to consider the lights or shadows. Step 2 We prepare the brushes we’re going to work with in the illustration. These brushes can create effects of ink, pen, engraving and other textures. Start from a circle, then using the Convert Anchor Point Tool (Shift + C) sharpen some of the anchors in corners. Step 3 We drag each of the figures resulting to the Brushes panel. In the popup window we select the option “Art Brush” Step 4 In the pop-up panel we use the scale to 10% in width, choose the option “Stretch to Fit Stroke Length”. In Colorization we choose the Method “Hue Shift”, so the strokes we make will have the color fill we choose. Step 5 Now, we have brushes to make “ink” effects. We can create brushes of shapes and thickness as we want by adjusting the settings in the …

Quick Tip: Create an ASCII Inspired Text-based Image with Illustrator
Mar 7th
In this tutorial you will learn how to create an ASCII inspired Text-based Image. This technique will allow you to create images more interesting than you could create with mono-spaced fonts and utilize a wider array of fonts in the process. One could say what we are going to do is to create monospaced font patterns. After a short excursion to Photoshop to prepare our reference image, we will continue with our process in Illustrator, which will result in an astonishing result. Step 1 When creating ASCII art it is imperative to use a monospaced font . By using it, you can be sure the characters are evenly spaced horizontally. The first 3 example fonts are monospaced, which means their width is always the same. Tahoma and Didot, being traditionally created for typesetting, run in different widths. As you can see below, the characters of the monospaced font follow a grid, while – by default – the font with varying widths does not. Every typewriter uses a monospaced font. When looking at the typebars you will notice that each has the same size. On the other hand, in traditional typesetting every sort is just as wide as its containing character. Legibility is far better with non-monospaced fonts, so monospace fonts are mainly used for writing code nowadays. Step 2 I have used this stock image with kind permission of …

Quick Tip: How to Create a Quick and Easy Diagonal Pattern
Jan 11th
In this tutorial you will learn how to easily create a diagonal pattern in Adobe Illustrator. Creating seamless patterns is a challenge in itself, but it is even harder if the pattern is supposed to be at an angle. But there is an easy trick to do so by creating a simple straight pattern first. Step 1 Create a square rectangle as a base for your pattern. You can do so by selecting the Rectangle Tool (M) from the Tools panel. Double click anywhere on your canvas. By doing so a window will pop up in which you can enter the exact size you want for your square. I chose 1 × 1 in. But you can make it as big as you want your pattern to be. Step 2 Duplicate the square, I use Command + C and Command + F. This will paste the copy of your square in exactly the same place it was before. Select one of the reference points at the bounding box in the middle and hold down Option while dragging it into the middle of the rectangle. Holding down Option will help you to keep the rectangle symmetrical from the center. Fill this rectangle with black and change the Opacity to 20%. Step 3 Repeat the previous step with a new rectangle. This one will be filled with white. Step 4 Do it one more time and fill the new rectangle with black again. By doing these three steps you make sure that the bottom and top of your pattern repeats seamlessly. Which colors, opacities and blend modes you use is entirely up to you. Step 5 Select the three new rectangles and duplicate them. Keep the rectangles selected and turn them by 90
